Join us as we discuss the process of how to accurately age a deer, or any other mammal, using the Cementum Annuli analysis method. This process is a real must for anyone implementing or following a Quality Deer Management (QDM) program that wants to make better select harvest decisions or back up their data with a scientific methodology. To some this is a new way to accurately age a deer, bear, elk , moose, sheep etc. or any other big game species, but it is a process that has been in the hands of researchers long enough to establish its accuracy and credibility, and now it is available to you as a low cost laboratory analysis. Aging deer by the wear of their teeth is like trying to age a car tire by looking at how much tread is left on it according to Chidgey , molar wear is not an accurate method for aging deer and we explore the science here to help you make better wildlife management decisions.

We discuss his book “Ghost Grizzlies”, which has recently been released in its 3rd edition, with many new photos’ and information not available before. We talk about the grizzlies that many believe may still exist in the mountains of Colorado, including the 1979 incident involving guide Ed Wiseman and the truly last known Colorado grizzly. David talks about his books “A Man Made of Elk”, “Writing Naturally” (which is a guidebook for anyone wanting to write about the outdoors) and also about a Petersen cult-classic “Racks”, including future plans to re-release much of that books information under a new handle. David shares details about his life and how they have brought him to where he is today, also discussing his very important role with Trout Unlimited.

David evokes the kindred spirit of the outdoorsman within you when you read his writing or listen to him speak. His talent is endless and his personality and demeanor infectious, this show will make you long for a mountain hike. He and Kevin share a parallel of having chased grizzly sightings in Colorado for many years making this podcast a great connection and a really good listen, we hope you enjoy it.

Jeremy’s question was randomly selected from those received through our contact page. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in this giveaway.

Jeremy submitted the question: “I live in South Dakota and I was wondering if there is a food plot seed mix that is beneficial to the deer I have on my land. I live near the Missouri river and I have the mule deer as well as the whitetail along with pheasants. So basically is there an all around seed mix that will help with all the animals I have and not just a seed mix that is designed for one species.”

To answer Jeremy’s question we went straight to the experts at the Whitetail Institute of North America and spoke with Jon Cooner, Director of Special Projects at the institute. Click on the streaming icon to listen to Jon’s answer to the question or download this podcast from the link graphic below.

Thank you Jeremy for the question and Mr. Cooner for the answer that we feel many will benefit from hearing!

Jeremy won the kit from The Whitetail Institute of North America containing:

Fact filled DVD on how you can attract, hold and grow, big bucks!
DVD contains exclusive Trophy Buck footage!
Sample packs of seeds. Enough to cover 100 square feet!
Subscription to Whitetail News!

We also talk about their new endeavor with xontv.tv where they are slated to begin having programming for the internet based television system. In our second segment we talk about the offerings and information you can get from their company and we round off the show talking about the very important initiative Sportsmen Against Hunger, a near and dear program to Denny and his team.

I am sure you will find this show informative and interesting. We at Today’s Wilderness wish USA Outback TV the best of luck in their new affiliation with xontv.tv and look forward to seeing their programs again.
