About The Host
A Pennsylvania native, Kevin grew up hunting, fishing and trapping in Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains. For twelve years he traded those mountains for the opportunity to live and study in the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado. In his studies and work with wildlife, Kevin immersed himself in the study of big game mammals of Colorado at a rate of two solid years per species, with special extended emphasis on black and grizzly bears.
From 1999 to 2001, Kevin conducted an in-depth research project to study bear attacks on humans for the purpose of providing support material for an educational video. The study was an attempt to associate the pre-attack activity of the perpetrating animal in a known attack situation in contrast to those that ended in bluff scenarios. The results of that two year study have provided extremely valuable insight to bear attacks and just how unpredictable the animal can be.
Kevin served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society in Denver Colorado in the late 90’s, where he was involved in management activity, fundraising and hands-on trap and transplant efforts of Bighorn Sheep. He also did independent project work studying Mountain Lion population densities along the Front Range area of Colorado, working to develop a non-invasive process for hair collection that would assist wildlife managers in accurate density analysis through the analysis of collected hair samples for DNA study. The goal was to ultimately impact tag allocations in an area where the population is thought to be underestimated.
Throughout his time in Colorado, Kevin was involved with a variety of organizations doing classes and fieldwork with institutions such as the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Working to develop proficiencies in Wildlife Management, Forestry and Wildlife Conservation, Ecology, Geology, Biometry, Endocrinology, Evolutionary Ecology, Conservation Biology, Cellular Neurophysiology, Kevin spent over a decade doing field work and writing to couple with his education to become a trusted independent researcher.
During his career, Kevin has had numerous published articles on outdoor and wildlife management related topics and is an established wildlife Photographer. In 2006 he published a 58 chapter compilation book of his work entitled “Decade”. He has also guided for individuals and acted as a scout for outfitters working with Moose, Elk , Deer, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goats and of course, Bears. He also spent two summers as an interpretive tour guide in Rocky Mountain National Park. Kevin has previously been in law enforcement as well as having been a part-time Larimer County Colorado Park Ranger and previously a part-time Deputy Waterways Conservation Officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Now residing back in his home state of Pennsylvania with his wife Sandy, daughter Cienna and son Wyatt, Kevin continues to lecture for sporting expositions and private businesses such as gun store events, sporting organization functions as well as libraries and colleges. He is actively involved with wildlife management issues as an independent consultant working with population density studies, harvest and tag allocation issues, wildlife forensics, and remnant population analysis. He also continues to monitor grizzly reintroduction initiatives remotely.
Kevin has previously been in Radio Broadcasting and has a background in the production of commercials for outdoor sportsmen events. Some of the commercial clients have included: The Addison volunteer Fire Departments Sportsman’s Exposition and George Klucky’s Wilderness Films. He also works as part of the adjunct faculty for Allegany College of Maryland’s Bedford Pennsylvania campus, where he instructs Creative Photography and other outdoor and wildlife opportunities offered through that facility.
Kevin joined the Water and Woods Network team as a Staff Writer in 2004, with emphasis on wildlife management as well as habitat and wild resources. Today Kevin acts as Editor for the Water and Woods Online Magazine and continues to provide content to the Deer Fever forum.
